National Worship Leaders Conference Recap

Picture 1

It has almost been one week since the conference ended, so I thought I would share a few quick thoughts about the National Worship Leader Conference.  Overall, I was very impressed with the conference, but let me give a few more detailed remarks.

  • The church that we met at, Church of the Resurrection, was an excellent host.  The facilities were awesome, and the staff that kept them maintained and clean after such an event did a fantastic job!  I cannot wait to go back next year!
  • The organization of the conference was also tops! They moved us along smoothly from one event to the other.
  • The sessions that they offered were very diverse.  Everything from churches using the web to songwriting to rehearsing your band.  All the sessions I attended were very well done!
  • The opportunity to be up close to the artist was also a great treat!  Many times artists that tour are very hands off, but Paul Baloche, Vicky Beeching, Laura Story, Tommy Walker and many others were walking the halls and chatting with people like they were old friends (and I am sure that some were).  I appreciate it when people are real and approachable like that.
  • Something else about the artists that thrilled me was the fact that most of them were involved in local church ministries.  They may tour some, but when they are home, they are leading worship and involved.  I love that!  That makes what they do on stage much more effective in my book!
  • I enjoyed being able to worship with worshipers! I imagine that it was just a taste of what heaven will be like! People singing their guts out in praise to the King of Kings! No folded arms saying, “I dare you to move me!”  It was awesome!  There was no arguing about song selection or volume or who got to do what… no one cared, we were there to worship!
  • It was also a great treat to meet many people that I know only by being connected through the web.  I have met many people through facebook and Twitter, but to get to meet them in person was awesome!  It was great to meet and spend time with Gary Durbin, Fred McKinnon, John Saddington, Rich Kirkpatrick, Kim Bontrager, Ben Abu Saada, Wisdom Moon, Jonathan Riggs, Jim Drake, Chris Gambill, Nick Arbuckle and many others.

I would encourage those who are on the fence about attending this conference that it is well worth the money to attend. It will recharge your spirit for leading God’s people in worship! It is good to connect with other worship leaders and to hear their stories.  Hope to see you next year!

A Few Links You Need To Check Out!

I am still processing some of the things I heard last week at the National Worship Leaders Conference and will write a bit about it later this week.  Until then, here are some great links to other blogs with some great content that is well worth your time to check out:

  • Tony has a sneak peek at a video from the New Hillsong recording that is due out August 4th.  Love their music and passion for worship!
  • Brian’s post about divorce really hits a soft spot in my heart.  I wrestle with questions about this often.
  • Rob hits the nail on the head with this post about Christianity and its relationship with “going to church.”
  • Are you a Worship Pastor that is not getting along with your Lead Pastor?  Tim writes about the tension that brings.
  • Perry talks about Preparation H (Yes, I write that correctly) and how it relates to confession.  Gotta read this one!

Hope you all have a great day!

Worship Confessional: July 26th, 2009

I had a fantastic week being able to attend the National Worship Leaders Conference in Leawood, KS at the Church of the Resurrection.  I will post about the conference this week after I digest and process it a bit more.  I am filled up though, and could not wait to get back to my church and lead worship today!  I woke up and immediately changed my mind on one of the songs we were doing… I had to do one that I heard this last week at the conference! So we did!  This was also the second week in the series “Comfortable,” and one of our men, Richard Perez, spoke today on the topic “Lazy Boy.”  He did a fantastic job! Ok, on to the set-list!

Refresh, Renew, Rejoice!

I am at the National Worship Leader Conference with about a billion other people (yes, that is an exaggeration!).  I am sitting in the lobby of the host church (lobby makes it sound very small!  It is not!  I love to watch people, so that is what i am doing as we wait to go eat and then catch the evening events.  As I look around it is cool to see people reconnecting with friends, laughing, sharing stories and just having a good time. It is so cool to see!  There are many churches represented.  Many different beliefs held, and yet, we are all getting along.  That is so refreshing!

I grew up in a system that said if you do not believe just like me, I cannot have anything to do with you.  And, you must be ungodly and a heretic.  We did not say it in so many words, but that was our practice.  Once I got into college and realized how many differences there could be I was amazed at how little tolerance was shown for things that make no difference at all, and this was among “believers.”  Over the last several years, I have listened to people criticize other people, who they don’t even know,  just because they usually criticized people who were making huge impact for the Kingdom or were doing things different.  Quite honestly, I am tired of the egos, tired of the fussing and tired of small people trying to make themselves big all in the name of Jesus.

We will worship together tonight… several thousand of us.  It will be a taste of heaven I am sure.  I am sure there are some there are some that would criticize us and how we worship here tonight.  They probably won’t like heaven either…

Today was the start of our new series called “Comfortable,” and we had a lot to pack into the service today.  We had a drama, camp video and a baby dedication to get in, so we planned for a bit shorter music sets. Even with that planning, we ended up running out of time and had to cut another song out of the second set.  It was a good kick-off to the new series though.  After service, I headed to Kansas City, where I am attending the National Worship Leader Conference.  It should prove to be a great time of learning and worship!  If you are coming or already here, let me know, and follow the link to the NWLC and come to the meet-up on Tuesday evening.  On to the set-list!

  • Friend Of GodHoughton/Gungor
  • Glorious OneFee

Drama (This was adapted from a Lucado piece to fit the theme of our series – great job Connie and cast!)

Message – “Comfortable”  Our pastor brought the first talk in series, and specifically talked about God moving us from comfort to being uncomfortable and using that to do great things for Him.  Great start to the series!  Our titles for the four weeks are: Comfortable, Lazy Boy, Armchair Quarterback, Rearrange.  Lots we could do under those titles!

Time of response

Baby dedication

Offering – We played the camp video report during offering to save some time…

  • HosannaFraser  (We had to cut this one due to time… one of my favorites!)
  • SweeterCruse-Ratcliff/Houghton/Houghton (We had a rough start to this one!  Sound glitch during the intro… I know, that never happens in your church!  We pulled it together and we ended up ok.)

Well that is all for this week!  Next week we celebrate on year of doing Sunday Set-lists at Fred’s site!  Join in the fun!

Today was another awesome day at G’ville!  The singing was fantastic! Our new lighting setup was awesome and very complimentary to the service (thanks Kody and Anthony!), and the message was very good as well (very well done Al)! People responded to the message, and I believe people took a step toward Jesus as they worshiped our God today in His house!  I love Sundays!  Ok, let’s get to the setlist!

Freedom!  Today we celebrate the freedom we have in our nation. We thank all who have served and given their lives so we can have that freedom. I also hope you’re experiencing the ultimate freedom that we find through Jesus and the cross!  John 8:36 – So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
