Worship Confessional: May 31st, 2009

worship_confession1The last day of May was a beautiful day here in Wichita and a great day at G’ville!  We took time to honor our graduates from High School and college.  Basically, we gave them a little gift and our Pastor preached on preparing for the future by the way that we live now.  Attendance looked good, and the people were really singing again today in their worship!  Ok, here is the setlist:

After church, I had a lunch with my worship teams.  I love the people I get to work with.  God has blessed us, and I am looking forward to seeing what God has in store for us as we serve here with them!  Thanks G’ville!

Never Forget

memorial-day-flags

I hope we never forget the great sacrifice that has been made for the freedom we enjoy.  Thank you to all those who have sacrificed for us to have the freedoms we enjoy, take for granted, and many times, take advantage of.  Have a great day everyone!

Worship Confessional: May 24th, 2009

worship_confession1We had a wonderful day at G’ville today.  Another day where the people just seemed totally engaged in the worship of the One Who is worthy!  They sang with energy and passion, and it just filled the room!  We were down a bit in attendance.  Well, maybe not if you count the church at the lake!  (JK!).  The Spirit of the service did not suffer with a bit lower attendance, that is for sure!

We were missing our acoustic player again this week but the sound we got from our two electrics, bass 2 keyboards and the drums was great… did not seem to miss  thing!   So, here is our setlist for the day:

  • Marvelous LightHall
  • Made Me GladWebster
  • Amazing Grace/My Chains Are GoneTomlin/Excell/Newton/Rees/Giglio

Video intro for the message: Video was a Memorial Day Tribute

Message – We are in between message series here, so our pastor’s talk had a bit of memorial day in it with a challenge to daily love those that we still have with us, and of course, to love and worship God while we have the opportunity.

Time of response: Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone

Offering

  • The StandHouston
  • Glorious OneFee – This was our first time doing this song.  We had a rough start for some reason, but it pulled together by the end and seemed to be catching on.  We will do it again next week.

We had a church picnic after the service at a local park. We do not do that often, but it was really a great time to hang with our people.

lifechurch

This is the title that I usually use for my weekly recap of the day that we have at our church. This week though, we had our youth lead the service, and I have received many reports that it was an awesome service!  I did not attend, because I took the opportunity (since I was not leading) to go and visit Lifechurch.tv.  Actually, I took some of my team to go and check things out.  I love being able to do that, as it allows vision to be cast without having to say a word!  Lifechurch.tv is an awesome movement of God!  They have been blessed, that is for sure!  I cannot even remember all the songs they did, but it was an incredible experience that left my guys talking like crazy all the way back. I would encourage every worship leader to take the opportunity to go somewhere else with some of your team. It gives vision and puts ideas in your heads of what can be done. It was an awesome day that I know God will use to make us better!

I cannot wait to read some more of the recaps from everyones day!  This post is also part of Sunday Setlists at Fred McKinnon [dot] com

Happy Mother’s Day to everyone!  I love having visitors on Sunday without a bunch of promotion, and Mother’s Day always brings out lots of visitors! We finished our “X-Factor” series last week, so this was pretty much a “loner” week as far as a theme goes.  Well, I guess that is not really true since it was Mother’s Day.  That can kind of dictate some of the things you do.  Had about 100 extra people today, that was cool!  On to the setlist!

  • Friend of GodHoughton/Gungor
  • Sing, Sing, SingTomlin/Reeves/Gilder/Carson/Nunn

Choir – Still Amazed (Still Amazed Live Choral Book)

  • Beautiful OneHughes

Message – Our pastor spoke, the talk was titled “What Do You Have In Your Hand?”  The talk was about God taking what we are and what we have and making more out of it than we ever could.  He used the story of Moses and his rod for the text.

Time of response: Draw Me Close -Carpenter

It was a really nice day, and lunch for my wife at Olive Garden just topped it off! She deserved it, she is a good momma! Hope you all had a great day!

Responsible "To" or Responsible "For?"

A couple of months ago I was at Granger Community Church for a couple days of workshops that they were holding.  I took Mark Waltz’s classes both days, and a statement he made in that class has stuck with me and keeps replaying itself in my head (Yes, I hear voices! – JK).  That statement was this, “We are responsible ‘to’ people, we are not responsible ‘for’ people.”

As I have mulled that over in my head for the last couple of months, and used it as a lens in which to do ministry, it has helped to to focus on what I need to do for others, and leave the rest up to God.  As I was reading in Acts this morning, I came across Paul’s goodbye to the church in Ephesus.  As he writes to them, he says in verse 26I tell you today that I am no longer responsible for any of you!” A few verses later (32) he says, “I now place you in God’s care.” He says that after he tells them all of the things he has done to help them take their next steps and after he tells them, “Ok, now it is up to you to go on from here.”  Paul knew he had come to the end of what he could do, and that the rest was up to the work that God wold have to do in their lives.

Many people in churches today have this idea that we must push people along the same route, and that it all takes the same amount of time for everyone to get to the next step.  They treat the journey in Christ like it has a cookie cutter design to it that everyone should follow.  That breeds image rather than true spiritual growth.  It breeds Pharisees rather than disciples.  But that is what happens when we think we are responsible for people rather than to them.

Being responsible for people brings a pressure and responsibility that God never designed into a person’s life.  If someone does not take their next step, then I feel like I have failed.  Being responsible to people means that I am sharing what I have to share, leading people to the table, but they have to make the decision to eat, I cannot force them. That is up to them to decide and for God to work.

Mark illustrated it so well.  Let me just cut and paste here:

  • If we understand that are are responsible to people, then I understand they have a choice… if I feel responsible for people, I think I should choose for them.
  • If we understand that are are responsible to people, then I know they must figure out their next step… if I feel responsible for people, I think I should tell them what there next step is.
  • If we understand that are are responsible to people, then I understand they must bear the consequences of their actions… if I feel responsible for people, I assume the guilt, or worse yet the shame for them.
  • If we understand that are are responsible to people, then I share their journeys, offering encouragement and teaching… if I feel responsible for people, I try to direct their journeys, never allowing them to wrestle or mess up.
  • If we understand that are are responsible to people, then I talk to God a lot on their behalf… if I feel responsible for people, I tend to talk to people a lot on God’s behalf.
  • “If Jesus trusts the Holy Spirit, maybe we should too!”
  • “It is God that does the growing, we just get in the way.”

So, how do you do ministry?  Do you feel responsible for people or to people?  What do you think about the difference?

Every week I am in God’s house I can hardly believe that I get to do what I do.  I love the Lord and His church, and it is so cool to be able to be work with my teams in leading worship.  We had a wonderful day today, the singing was off the charts… just so moving! Maybe it was just me, but it did seem people were really engaged today.

This was the last week of our X-Factor series, and the topic of the day was “Xhort.”  Our pastor spoke, and talked about why and how we should encourage one another as we do life together.  Here is our schedule for the day:
