Interview with Jason Miller, Pastor of Worship at Granger Community Church

Jason Miller serves as Pastor of Worship and College Age Ministries at Granger Community Church.  When you see Granger’s services, you cannot help but notice the creativity and excellence in the arts that are presented week in and week out.  Jason is a big part of that.  If you have not seen any of their services, GO HERE and watch some of them.  I was able to sit down and spend a few minutes with him last week while attending some workshops that were hosted by Granger.

I appreciate Jason giving up some of his time to do this interview.  You can read more about Jason at his blog, commonjason.com.

Interview with Kem Meyer: "Less Clutter. Less Noise."

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I was able to spend some time at Granger Community Church last week.  While there, Kem Meyer (Granger’s Communications Director) was gracious enough to give me a few moments of her time to talkabout her new book,  “Less Clutter. Less Noise.: Beyond Bulletins, Brochures and Bake Sales.”  I loved her passion as she spoke about how churches make things WAY to complicated!  (Sorry for few seconds of fan noise and the phone interference… I think Kem’s new iPhone and laptop were sitting right next to my camera!)

Read Kem’s blog here. Thanks again Kem!  I cannot wait to read your book!

Interview with Tim Stevens: "Pop Goes The Church"

pop_goes1Last week I spent some time at Granger Community Church as they hosted their workshops.  It was a time of great encouragement, and I learned a lot that I am hoping will help me to serve Jesus better at my church.  It was also an honor to be able to spend time with some of the leaders of the church.  I interviewed a few of these leaders, and will be posting them over the next few days.

Today, we will start with Tim Stevens, who is the Executive Pastor of the church, and author of the book, “Pop Goes The Church.”  It was a very influential book in my own journey, but more influential when I met Tim was the passion and drive that he has to reach people where they are at, and to help them take their next step towards Jesus.  Enjoy the interview, and come back over the next few days to see who else had to endure my questioning!

I appreciate Tim and all the rest of the Granger staff for giving up some of their time to allow me to meet with them!

Lookie what I got!

roachesI have had a PDF copy of Tony Morgan’s book “Killing Cockroaches” for a bit now.  In fact, I am almost through with the book, and will be posting a short review here in a few days.  Tony was nice enough to send out some advance copies of the book to those of us who got in on being able to review.  I was hoping it would be autographed so I could eBay it… but it was not!  Oh well…  You can get your copy here!

Tony Morgan on “The New Traditional Church”

I love much of what Tony Morgan posts about!  I happen to be reading his book “Killing Cockroaches,” and will post a review of the book here shortly.  Today though, I wanted to share a post that Tony made on his blog last week.  Great insight, and the discussion that follows his post has some great stuff in it as well!  Here is just a bit of what he said:

I’m wondering what would happen if rather than focusing so much on transferring knowledge, we focused on helping people love God, love others and make new disciples. What would happen if we asked people to spend less time at the church and more time in the lives of people who need Jesus? What would happen if we offered fewer gatherings to transfer knowledge and more tools to help people study the Bible on their own? What would happen if there was less emphasis on church activities and more emphasis on reaching the world for Jesus?

You can read the full post here.  It is well worth the time!  Thanks Tony!

Am I More Concerned With God Or Others?

questionsI ran across this post today while blog surfing.  Perry Noble is Pastor of Newspring Church, and is doing a fantastic job!  I should say, and he would also say this, God has His hand on Perry and His church.  They are doing things for Jesus that are just incredible!  In his blog, Perry likes to posts lists.  This morning, he started a list titled “”Six Questions I Try To Keep In Front Of Me.”  The second one on the list caught my eye this morning…

Am I More Concerned About God Or Others? Scripture is very clear, “Do your best to present yourself to God…” When “the end” is here I will stand before God and will NOT answer as to… Whether or not I kept people happy. Whether or not I appeased the bloggers. Whether or not I preached sermons that people WANTED to hear. I will answer for whether or not I was faithful to WHO He called me to be and WHAT He called me to do! I have a quote hanging in my office by Craig Groeschel that says, “The quickest way to forget what God says about me is to become obsessed with what others say about me.” SO TRUE! When my head hits the pillow at night I’ve got to know that I have tried my best to honor HIM and HIS calling on my life…which IS NOT EASY in a world where everyone seems to have an opinion and a website! BUT…focusing on them doesn’t allow me to focus on Him! (BTW…it isn’t helping you either!!!) Paul said it best in Galatians 1:10…we have a choice…I have made mine and will not look back…there is way too much at stake!

Everyone that has ever been involved in ministry, whether full-time or as a volunteer knows that you will NEVER make everyone happy… it is impossible!  Jesus did not even do that!  What we have to guard from is holding people’s opinions about us higher than we do God’s design and desire for us… that is hard, especially when you are a people-pleaser by nature.  Honestly, that is something that I fight constantly!  Here is the deal though, until we are being who God created us to be, we will never reach our full potential, and we will not be satisfied.  Once we realize who God made us to be, and start living it, our focus will shift to that of pleasing Him, and not people.  We will be more concerned with reaching people than we are keeping people.  Trying to keep people is an act of desperation… reaching people keeps things alive and Christ-centered.

Just something to chew on today… thanks Perry!

Free Webinar With Andy Stanley

I love being able to learn from other leaders that are doing fantastic things for God!  Being in Wichita does make it a little difficult to get to see other leaders very often.  Fortunately, the internet has made things a little easier, and many leaders like Andy Stanley, Tony Morgan and Perry Noble are doing Webinars that can bring people from all over the world together to glean from these great leaders.  I just learned of Andy Stanley’s this morning.  It is called “Drive-In” and he has a few of them scheduled through March.  Click on the link above, and see if you can schedule some time to make one or all of them!
