Worship Confessional: November 2, 2008

I started the day off wondering if I was even going to make it to services at all.  I came down with the flu Saturday morning, and it just got worse throughout the day.  By evening, I was almost positive I was gonna be staying home on Sunday, which has only happened one other time in my 18 years of leading worship.  Anyways, I got  pretty good nights sleep (I am sure the extra hour helped), and by the time I woke up Sunday morning, I was feeling like I could probably make it through the day, which I did.  I hate missing services!  As I write this here on Sunday night, I am sure that being in services today has helped me feel better!  Ok, on to the day!

We started our missions emphasis month today with a video and a testimony from an organization called House of Hope which provides support for relationship struggles in families.  This is a wonderful ministry, and certainly there are many that could benefit from an organization like this for restoring relationships.

First service, we then went in to the only set we had for that service which included:

  • Friend Of God – Gungor/Houghton
  • Beautiful One – Hughes

The second service opened up with:

  • Sing, Sing, Sing – Tomlin/Reeves/Gilder/Carson/Nunn
  • Better Than Life – Cruse-Ratcliffe/Houghton

After the opening songs in both services, our pastor spent a short time talking about our “theme” for missions conference and the next year, which is Connections: Loving God, Loving Others, Serving Both.  He also spent some time encouraging our people to bring visitors and friends for a special day we have coming up called “Connection Sunday.”

In the second service, we then had our second set of songs, which were the two we did in the first service:

  • Friend Of God – Gungor/Houghton
  • Beautiful One – Hughes

Our Assimilation and Discipleship Pastor was our speaker for the day, and brought us a great message about having the world view that God does for people.  It was a great way kick of our missions, and fit right in with where we are heading as a church in encouraging our people to be relational in all areas of life.

The energy for the music was incredible.  Our people are really liking Tomlin’s Sing, Sing, Sing.  The passion in their singing today was just contagious!

Worship Confessional: October 19, 2008

Today was an unusual day for us.  Every year a small town just south of Wichita called Haysville (I happen to live in this town as well) has a Fall Festival, and on Sunday Morning they have what they call “Church In The Park.”  Though there are a number of churches in Haysville, Glenville has had the opportunity to be the church that does the services for the last few years.  So, we had our first service at the church (I did not lead, I was already at the park), and our second service was moved to the park for the day.  It really was a neat opportunity for us to get involved in the community.  So, here is our song selections for the day:

  • You Are GoodHoughton
  • Friend Of GodGungor/Houghton
  • Everlasting God – Brown/Riley
  • Marvelous Light – Hall

After that first set, our choir sang Holy, Holy, Holy from the Community Bible Church collection.  Then, one of our ladies sang Tomlin’s How Can I Keep From Singing.  She did an awesome job!  Our Pastor then gave a 15 minute message that was centered around the focus statement for our church – Loving God, Loving Others, Serving both.

After the message, we had another set of songs:

  • Hosanna – Baloche/Brown
  • How Great Is Our God – Tomlin/Reeves/Cash
  • Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) – Newton/Tomlin/Giglio

The choir did two more songs:

  • Jesus Messiah – Tomlin/Carson/Reeves/Cash
  • Orphans Of God - LaBar/Lindsey

The soloists on both songs did a fantastic job!  The wind was really strong during the service, so we had a few gusts that took some music away, knocked a couple stands over and messed with the mics, but over all, it was a great experience and an awesome opportunity to be out in the community.

Freedom

Today is a day where most of us in America will have an extra day off of work, and will spend time with the family at the lake, playing ball or just lazing around the house. I think it is a great day to do any of that, but let’s not forget that we have the freedom to do these things because of men and women that never did. They fought and bled and died so that we could have the country that we live in. Blood was shed for our freedom. Mark Batterson has a great post on his blog today about his. Head over and read it, and have a great day today!

Do the church shuffle…

Living In Springfield, Mo has its advantages and disadvantages. The area is an awesome place to raise a family, but the church culture here is certainly different than what I experienced in Chicago. One thing that has irritated me since I moved here was the amount of “transient Christianity” that abounds. It is nothing for someone to hop from one church to the next for no reason at all, or for the silliest reasons. I loved what Tim Stevens put in his blog today. Check it out…

Dearest Career Church Hopper:

I met you again on Wednesday, the same person smiling at me through a different face, telling me that you’ve been shopping for churches for months now, and that darn it, you “just can’t find one (you) like.” The music’s too rocky at this one, you said; the preacher too funny at that one. The latest one might make the cut, though: you’d had the pastor and his wife over the previous evening for a little “dinner audition” — your words, not mine — and he said things that made you feel good and comfortable, things that you already agree with, so you’re thinking about sticking around. At the very least, you could get your teaching from this church and your worship from that one.

I’m sure we’ll run into each other again, but before we do, I’d like to suggest some things you could perhaps think about before you move on to the next church, as I’m sure you will, whether this weekend or next year:

  • Christ didn’t bleed for the Church so you could treat your search for one like an episode of Survivor, deciding who to vote off the island this week.
  • The Church was not commissioned by Christ to meet your needs. You ARE the Church, and you’ve been commissioned to meet the needs of the world.
  • Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her (Eph 5:25). Quit treating his bride like a Jesus buffet where you can pick and choose what you like, hedging your bets against the pain and sacrifice of making a commitment.
  • Per scripture’s instructions to use your gifts in service to the Body of Christ — and its lack of instruction to search for a church that scratches you where you itch — you might want to consider what the Church you’re visiting needs from you, rather than the other way around.
  • If you only want to hear things you already know and agree with, save your Sundays and talk to yourself in the bathroom mirror.

Sincerely,
The Preacher’s Wife

Sorry for the lapse…

In posts.  Lot’s of things going on in life, and the blogging sometimes just does not get done depending on the mood I am in and the time I have.  Hopefully I can be a little more consistant with it.  if nothing else, I will just review what I am reading and post about my process of finding a new church to minister in.

Waiting on God

prayer-hands.jpgToday is just one of those days that I wish I could sleep through. Why? Well, some of you may already know that I am leaving my position as Worship leader at the church I serve in. My wife and I have prayed about it for awhile now, and we really feel that God wants us to go into a more contemporary type ministry to serve in. I am not talking about music, we already do some really good stuff where I am at. I am talking about philosophy and practice. I have a real burden to reach out to younger generations with the true Gospel of Jesus. I say true Gospel because I want to distinguish it from the “Gospel” that some preach that is nothing more than conforming to a certain image and going through the motions and you will be a spiritual person. I am not talking about the “Gospel” that says, accept Jesus and you can go to heaven and escape hell. I am all for the going to heaven and escaping hell thing, but there is so much more to being a Christ follower than that. The Gospel I am talking about is one that is centered around a day to day relationship that we can have with Jesus Christ. That is what Jesus longs for, and that is what will change your life. Not some fire insurance policy that a slick preacher sells you from the pulpit. There is nothing in a fire insurance policy that will help you with the day to day stuff of life.

So, what about this waiting on God stuff? Well, I really thought that we had a position in a great church ready to go. I had not really counted my chickens before they hatched so to say. But the visit we had with the church and the pastor was awesome, and it just seemed to click. But the call came yesterday that he could not say yes yet and that we should keep looking. Not a total closed door, but still not what was expected.

What I know: God knew all this and has a great plan for me and my family.

What is hard: Waiting on God to reveal that. If you know me, you know I am not the most patient person on the face of the planet.

I expect to see God do great things in the coming days. And I am sure He has a great place for us to go and serve, but sleeping this day away would have been a great idea as I wait on Him…

Well here we go!

Jason Petermann here! I never thought I would get into the world of blogging! I have friends that do, and though I have enjoyed reading their blogs, it just never struck me as something I would do. But here I am! Once I get this all set up, I plan on posting regularly (whatever that means!). Well, time for some more editing, so see ya later!
