Worship Confessional: September 20th, 2009

purp_confessional

Today was the kickoff to out fall schedule.  We started our two-service schedule back up, and started a new Hispanic service today as well.  Attendance was decent, and the Spirit of the day was fantastic!  We have been working through some sound issues, and had our sound pro  in services today to try and work some stuff out.  I would have to say that I was very pleased with the results, and it seems so far all of the comments about our changes have been positive.  We still have a bit of work to do, but things were as good as I have heard it since I have been here.

All the vocalists and instrumentalists did a terrific job today!  I am proud of the teams I get to serve with here at G’ville!  Let’s take a look at the setlist:

Forget about… ME?

mirrorIn my reading this morning, I came upon Luke 9:23… again. It is not that I have never seen this verse or heard a message preached on it. I have read it and hear many sermons on it before. But, it slapped me up side the head again this morning. Here is the verse:

Then Jesus said to all the people: If any of you want to be my followers, you must forget about yourself. You must take up your cross each day and follow me.

I hate this part: “you must forget about yourself” Not that I really hate the words that Jesus spoke… but I hate that they tell me to to forget about the person I think about the most. ME! I am selfish. I want what I want, when I want it. If you are honest, you are the same. At the core, we all think about ourselves first because we are selfish beings. You do not think so? Think about this:

  1. When you are driving, why do you pull out in front of someone when you know you should really wait?
  2. When you see someone else with something new, why do we think that we deserve it too?
  3. When you call the pastor up and complain about something, what is the complaint based on? (Usually, our personal preferences!)

See, we all have a built in bias that puts ourselves first. Everything from where we go to eat or deciding to serve somewhere in church is all based on ME and my selfishness. The thing is, Jesus says if we want to follow Him, we have to forget about ourselves. That is hard. It is not natural in our sin nature. But it what we are suppose to do as Christ followers.

So, forget about yourself today. In some small way, deny yourself, take up the cross, and follow hard after Christ!

Worship Confessional: September 13, 2009 – Kid's Choir Edition

purp_confessional

Today was a special day for us at Glenville.  Our Kid’s Choir presented a musical that they have been working on for the summer.  We have done this on Grandparents Day the last couple of years, and it is a great way to celebrate!  They did “Life School Musical” and did a fantastic job!  I caught a few pics of the event and uploaded them to Flickr.

We had no setlist today, as the Kid’s Musical was the whole service.  We start back into our fall schedule this week and are very excited for that!

It was a holiday weekend, so attendance was an unknown element this weekend, though we figured there would be a lot of people gone.  There was.  But it did not hurt the spirit of the service at all.  People sang well and were engaged in every aspect of the service.  The message today was on the family, and how families can overcome storms that will come our way by building on a foundation of truth.  Our pastor did a great job!  We had a baby dedication today as well, which is always a special event for families.  Here is the setlist:

  • You, You Are GodBeach
  • Ancient of DaysHarvill/Sadler
  • From The Inside OutHouston

Message

Time of response

Baby dedication

Offering

  • All Because of JesusFee

Closing announcements (typically we do not do this, but we have a lot getting ready to start up in the fall, so we wanted a bit of time to focus on some of this)

I hope God moved in your services this weekend!  This post is also part of Sunday Setlists at Fred McKinnon [dot] com.

Donald Miller's New Book!

IMG_0172

I have been  anticipating the release of Donald Miller’s new book, “A Million Miles in a Thousand Years” for quite some time! I was fortunate to be able to get an advance copy to read and write a review on it for the release of the book on September 29th.  So, the book will release, my review will be posted, and everyone that posts a comment on my review post that day will be entered into a drawing to win a copy of the book.  So, visit here on the 29th, leave a comment telling me why you want this book, and be entered into the give away! Oh, you can visit before the 29th too!  That would be perfectly acceptable.

Worship Confessional: August 30th, 2009

Our day today was a little unusual.  In fact we had seven different speakers for the message today! We did an overview of ministry today for our message, so each of the full/part time pastors had the opportunity to share for a few minutes about their area of ministry.  It was an unusual but fun way to present ministries in the church. We have a big kickoff on September 20th to get back into the fall schedule.  I am looking forward to that! Because of the unusual way we did the message, we never got to the last two songs of the day.  I will go ahead and list them in the setlist, but we never did get to them.  On to the setlist!

  • Marvelous LightHall
  • Salvation Is HereHouston (First time we have done this one… I LOVE this song!  What a declaration in the chorus!)

Just a quick post for the setlist.  I am at the airport with my wife to catch a plane to Vegas for some R & R.  This is our 20th anniversary year, so we decided to take a little trip together for the week!

We had a great day of worship today!  Everything went just great!  The people were singing with all their hearts as we lifted up our God in praise!  I am so proud of the team that led.  Revelation Song is quickly becoming a favorite of mine, and the people sing it out with conviction!  Our Pastor did an awesome job speaking today about “Two Roads, Two Gates, Two Destinations” out of Matthew 7:13-14 !  Heaven and Hell!  Don’t hear much about Hell these days!  Well, that is all for now, here is the setlist for the weekend:

Worship Confessional: August 9th, 2009

We finished up our series called “Uncomfortable” today.  I was able to speak for this one, which was entitled “Armchair Quarterback.”  I talked about criticism: 1. Who gets criticized (ALL OF US!) 2. How to handle criticism.  I was glad I had the opportunity to speak, and more importantly, that God spoke to me about this subject in my own life.  I led worship as well today and was pleased that everything went so well!  I even changed a song on the way to the church (heard it on the radio, and just felt like God was saying “Do this one today.”  So I did, and I am glad I did!  I had “From The Inside Out” planned, but then swapped it out for “Revelation Song.”  Alrighty, here is the setlist!
