  • 9:52 AM Jason Petermann - Lasting Impressions… how to get someone to come back…
  • 9:53 AM Jason Petermann - Mark is explaining how he came to Granger, and how he felt about the place. The DNA just fit
  • 9:55 AM Jason Petermann - Questions we often ask about our returning guests:
  • 9:55 AM Jason Petermann - How do we get people to join our church?
  • 9:56 AM Jason Petermann - What curriculm?
  • 9:57 AM Jason Petermann - What if we first asked… what are people generally looking for?
  • 9:57 AM Jason Petermann - why do people come the first time?
  • 9:57 AM Jason Petermann - what might want to make people stay
  • 9:58 AM Jason Petermann - what are we trying to do?
  • 9:59 AM Jason Petermann - a lot of times, we rush things for people… we can make their journey awkward…
  • 9:59 AM Jason Petermann - showing a video…
  • 10:05 AM Jason Petermann - this is a great video… got do this one
  • 10:07 AM Jason Petermann - I wonder if sometimes we don’t escalate our expectations so fast that we make them feel awkward…
  • 10:10 AM Jason Petermann - table talk time…
  • 10:11 AM Jason Petermann - questions being asked are: “What do you believe motivates people to come back a second and third time?”
  • 10:12 AM Jason Petermann - needs being met, relationships, finding other people that are like them…
  • 10:13 AM Jason Petermann - Why do you want guests to come back? what do you hope motivates them?
  • 10:13 AM Jason Petermann - needs being met, relationships desired and developed
  • 10:14 AM Jason Petermann - lots of discussion in the room about these questions now
  • 10:15 AM Jason Petermann - People Matter
  • 10:16 AM Jason Petermann - People like to hide…
  • 10:16 AM Jason Petermann - we started that at a young age… peek-a-boo and hide and seek
  • 10:17 AM Jason Petermann - it is cute when you are young, but not when you get older
  • 10:19 AM Jason Petermann - big challenge is that we say that we will accept someone… when…
  • 10:19 AM Jason Petermann - when we do not feel accepted or like we belong, we hide
  • 10:20 AM Jason Petermann - our job is to create an enviroment that we accept them right where they are… right now… even after a week, 6 weeks, 6 months
  • 10:20 AM Jason Petermann - it does not matter how long it takes someone…
  • 10:20 AM Jason Petermann - we put a time-line on people, and that can be unrealistic
  • 10:21 AM Jason Petermann - What do you want a person’s life to look like after being around your church for… 2-3 weeks, 2-3 months, 2-3 years?
  • 10:21 AM Jason Petermann - when speaking of matuity and life change, the Bible uses “grow” language
  • 10:22 AM Jason Petermann - we think we can a little miracle grow on people and they will spring up overnight… the Bible talks nothing of that
  • 10:23 AM Jason Petermann - Romans 1:11 – “For I long to visit you so I can bring you some spiritual gift that will help you grow strong in the Lord.”
  • 10:25 AM Jason Petermann - ven in life, growth takes time
  • 10:25 AM Jason Petermann - a baby is not mature… neither is a 3-4 year old, or a 16yr old… or a 35 year old
  • 10:26 AM Jason Petermann - as we look over our own shoulder, we can see our growth process
  • 10:26 AM Jason Petermann - if we are in a process, why shouldn’t those in the church be in a process
  • 10:26 AM Jason Petermann - Not New
  • 10:27 AM Jason Petermann - How long does it take before someone is not new…
  • 10:31 AM Jason Petermann - discussions about that now in the room…
  • 10:31 AM Jason Petermann - everyone likes that “new” treatment
  • 10:31 AM Jason Petermann - we have to continue to communicate value
  • 10:32 AM Jason Petermann - What doesn’t change: 1. Intrinsic value
  • 10:33 AM Jason Petermann - people are always valuable
  • 10:33 AM Jason Petermann - 2. the need for respect does not change
  • 10:33 AM Jason Petermann - 3. Only one “you are here” X
  • 10:33 AM Jason Petermann - (x – where you are in your journey)
  • 10:33 AM Jason Petermann - 4. Life is about journey
  • 10:34 AM Jason Petermann - it is important to remember that we are where we are… and that is not a problem. We are in a journey
  • 10:34 AM Jason Petermann - video of Mark Beeson talking about the “X”
  • 10:39 AM Jason Petermann - wow, great video illustrating a journey…
  • 10:39 AM Jason Petermann - 5. God’s grace does not change because we are not new
  • 10:43 AM Jason Petermann - we want people to belong, God’s grace makes that possible
  • 10:44 AM Jason Petermann - Manychurches make it harder to join them than Jesus did to follow Him… ouch! Very true of many churches though! wow!
  • 10:47 AM Jason Petermann - Membership. Assimilation. Belonging.
  • 10:47 AM Jason Petermann - Invite people to something bigger than themselves
  • 10:47 AM Jason Petermann - we should invite people to the movement of Jesus Christ
  • 10:48 AM Jason Petermann - what if we invite people to the movement instead of joining our church
  • 10:48 AM Jason Petermann - What if we invite them to relationship, not a list of rules
  • 10:48 AM Jason Petermann - what if we invite them to a partnership, not merely a covenant
  • 10:50 AM Jason Petermann - partnership communicates everyone carrying their part of the load…
  • 10:50 AM Jason Petermann - another video with Mark Beeson…
  • 10:51 AM Jason Petermann - Mark Beeson is a master at casting vision… wow!
  • 10:52 AM Jason Petermann - what if we invite people to belong to something they want to be a part of
  • 10:53 AM Jason Petermann - taking questions from the floor now…
  • 10:57 AM Jason Petermann - the words recruit and assimilate put bulls-eyes on peoples backs
  • 10:58 AM Jason Petermann - the whole tone that needs to be communicated is “You are on your journey, it is yours.. whatever steps you take are up to you…”
  • 10:59 AM Jason Petermann - end of session 1… back for session 2 in about 15 minutes…
